Minister Verburg of Agriculture would allow farmers to grow genetically modified potatoes, rice, soy and corn . “It’s not if GMO crops will become available, but how they will”, the minister said.
She believes the rules need to be changed. According to Verburg, the debate on genetic modification is too much governed by emotions. “Facts should speak, not emotions,” said Verburg.
Strict
Unlike the United States, Brazil and China, the cultivation of genetically, modified crops are controversial in Europe. The rules are strict and only one species of corn are allowed in Europe.
The Minister thinks that other crops should be allowed.
Effects
Genetically modified crops are plants whose genes are modified by people, so for example more resistant to disease.
Scientists say that with GMO technology the world food problem can be solved. According to opponents, the effects on food safety and the environment are not clear enough.
